Introduction
Have you ever faced a problem that seemed small compared to the “big issues” of life, yet it weighed heavily on you? Sometimes we hesitate to pray about such things, thinking they’re too trivial for God. But in 2 Kings 6:1–7, we find an unusual miracle that reminds us that God cares about the ordinary problems of ordinary people.
This is the story of the floating axe head—a moment that reveals not only the power of God but also His compassion for His children.
The Problem: An Axe Head Lost
Elisha’s prophetic school was growing, and the sons of the prophets needed a bigger meeting place. They went to cut wood by the Jordan River, and in the process, one of the young men lost his borrowed axe head in the water.
For us, this might seem like a small issue. But for that young man, it was serious—he couldn’t afford to replace it. To him, this was a genuine crisis.
Lesson: God doesn’t just care about the big, life-altering events. He cares about the details of your life, too.
The Cry: “Alas, Master!”
The young man cried out to Elisha, “Alas, master! For it was borrowed.” He didn’t hide his problem. He didn’t pretend everything was fine. He admitted his need.
When was the last time you cried out to God about something that seemed small but still mattered to you?
Lesson: If it matters to you, it matters to God. Prayer is not just for emergencies—it’s for everything.
The Miracle: An Axe Head Floats
Elisha cut down a stick, threw it into the river, and—against all laws of nature—the iron axe head floated to the surface. What was lost was restored.
This miracle shows us two things:
God’s power is unlimited. If He can make iron float, He can solve your impossible situation.
God’s concern is personal. He intervened not for a king or warrior, but for a student who lost a borrowed tool.
Lesson: Nothing is too big for God’s power, and nothing is too small for His concern.
The Application: What Is Your Axe Head?
Some of you have “axe heads in the water”—situations that feel lost, hopeless, or out of reach. Maybe it’s a relationship, a financial burden, or even your spiritual fire.
The God who made an axe head swim is the same God who hears your prayers today. Bring your concerns to Him. Trust that He sees, He cares, and He is able.
Conclusion: An Extraordinary God for Ordinary People
The story of the floating axe head reminds us that God meets ordinary people in ordinary problems with extraordinary power.
So, what is your “axe head”? Whatever it is, place it in God’s hands. He specializes in the impossible, and He cares about you.
